The area around Livingston was settled in 1702 when the land was purchased from the Lenape Indians.
In 1811, sections around Livingston petitioned for the formation of Livingston Township, The town was named after William Livingston who was the first governor of Livingston.
Livingston is a suburban town located in Essex County, NJ The population is around 30,000 and covers approximately 14 square miles. Livingston offers easy access to New York City and many of the major
highways including RT 280, 80, 46 and 287 as well as the Garden State Parkway and the NJ Turnpike.
The town offers an excellent and sought out school system with 6 elementary schools, a sixth grade only middle school, a middle school and a high school. Livingston High School has received the Blue Ribbon
Award by the US Department of Education. With over 5800 students, achievement and academic excellence is the foundation of the school system.
The town offers extensive after school daycare, recreation programs, 2 community pools, tennis courts, playgrounds, basketball courts, sporting activities and the newest addition, a skate park! Livingston also boosts a dog park as well as over 400 acres of wooded parks and hiking trails.
Livingston offers an Express Shuttle service with round trip transportation between Livingston Mall and South Orange Train Station. Other transportation to NYC includes NJ Transit and Coach Bus with many stops throughout the town. Many residents also drive to nearby Harrison (10 Minute drive) to take the path train.
The Livingston Library was recently renovated and a wonderful experience. It is rated one of the best libraries in NJ.
